Chapter 14 – Dynamic DNS Client
Introduction
The Dynamic DNS (DDNS) client is used to update the IP address of the IP module in a DDNS server for the
configured domain name whenever the ip-address changes, thus leaving the domain name pointing to the current IP
address of the IP module all the time.
Important: DNS must be enabled in order to enable DDNS client.
Note: The DDNS server mentioned in this chapter refers to the DYNDNS server.
DDNS Client Features
Supports updating the IP address for the configured domain
Supports dynamic DNS and custom DNS
Supports restricted updating; i.e., updating only when the IP address changes
Supports the use of a wild card; i.e., allows *.yourhost.dyndns.org to point to yourhost.dyndns.org
Supports updating the correct IP address of modules behind firewalls
Registering a Domain
Before using a DDNS client, register a domain name in the DDNS server. To do this, create an account in the DDNS
server. Once the account is created, there are two services that can be used in the server. They are
Dynamic Service: In dynamic service, you can register a host name for any of the domain names offered by
the service. Dynamic service provides both paid and free service.

Custom service: In custom service, you can register a zone; i.e., create a domain name in any of the TLDs
(Top Level Domains) offered by the DDNS server.
Operations Performed by the DDNS Client
The two main operations done by the DDNS client are:
Sends a request to a checkip sever to get the ip-address of the ipmodule. This is useful because IP address
of the IP module behind a firewall may not be apparent.
Updating the IP address in the DDNS server, if needed.
Note: The DDNS server and the name of the server that provides checkip service has to be configured through the
CLI commands.
Commands to Enable/Disable DDNS Client
The host/serial device can use the command below to enable/disable DDNS Client
# set ip ddns <enable/disable>
The DDNS Client will be enabled/disabled only after a Save is issued.
