Chapter 6 – Serial-to-Network
Connectivity Using Serial Dial-in
Introduction
The auto dial-in feature enables the IP module to act as a Telnet or UDP client thus facilitating the serial device to
access any Telnet/terminal servers on the IP network (over the built-in modem interface). Once the session (Serial
Client to Server) is opened successfully, it allows two-way traffic between the serial device and the remote server.
Telnet Dial-in Features
The IP module, acting as a Telnet/RAW-TCP client, accommodates the following features when configured:
• Can open a session using Telnet client (residing in the IP module) in Telnet Mode or RAW Mode.
• Can open a session to the specified port from a Serial Command prompt (Manual Dial-in).
• Can switch between a Command prompt and a Dial-in session when the session is in Telnet mode.
• Can open the session to the configured port directly (Serial Auto Dial-in) whenever the serial port is free.
• Supports auto-dialin where two-way transfer occurs only after successful execution of auto-dialin chat-script.
The data transferred from the serial side to the server can be scanned for a configured delimiter; and when
the delimiter is found, a configured prefix can be appended.
• Supports auto-dialin where two-way transfer occurs either after successful execution of auto-dialin chat-
script or without any chat-script execution, with the data from serial to network getting filtered according to
configured filter values. The data transferred from the serial side to the server can be scanned for a
configured delimiter; and when the delimiter is found, a configured prefix can be appended. In addition to
that, the same data is also scanned for a configured suffix like (CR, LF, CRLF) to demarcate one single
message , and to apply the filters on it to decide whether its to be filtered or sent on to the server. This same
mode also has an optional timer provision, which can be used in conjunction with or without filters applied,
so that a time gap can be maintained in between two successful messages sent on to the network.
UDP Dial-in Features
The IP module, acting as a UDP client, accommodates the following features as per the configuration:
• Initiates a session using UDP client (residing at the IP Module).
• Switches between the Command prompt and the Dial-in session when the session is in UDP mode if
escape-monitor is enabled.
• Opens the session to the configured port directly (Serial Auto Dial-in) whenever the serial port is free.
Prerequisites
Telnet Mandatory Configuration Settings
The following items must be configured in order to use the dial-in feature:
• Enable Auto dial-in globally on all the serial ports.
# set serial auto-dialin enable
• Enable Auto dial-in on the serial port s0.
# set serial s0 auto-dial-in enable
• Set the Auto dial-in protocol.
# set serial s0 auto-dialin-protocol telnet
• Set the Auto dial-in Server IP Address.
# set serial s0 auto-dialin-ipaddress <ipaddress>
• Set the port to the one, which the Telnet client will be connected.
# set serial s0 auto-dialin-port <port_number>
An ERROR message will display if any of the above details are not configured or not valid.
